Maintaining Your Porsche’s Turbochargers: Service Guidelines

While harnessing the flow of your Porsche’s exhaust fumes to compress more air into the engine, the turbochargers rotate at terrific speed.

These hard-working components will suffer less wear with a little care and attention. Here are some guidelines for good Porsche turbocharger maintenance

Use the Right Engine Oil

Even though turbochargers are added onto the engine block rather than inside it, they’re still protected by the same oil and coolant. As they rotate so rapidly, proper lubrication is essential.

Make sure you use engine oil that is specifically engineered to resist the unique strain and heat of Porsche turbocharged engines. Your owner’s manual should provide guidance on this; you can also ask one of our helpful technicians.

Change the Oil Regularly

The turbines inside your turbochargers spin at a staggering 80,000 to 200,000 rotations per minute. This wears down the engine oil faster than other types of engines, which means you need to book more frequent oil changes.

Where twice a year may be sufficient for other drivers, your oil may need three or four changes annually. Check your owner’s manual and ask our technicians to figure out the ideal schedule.

Flush the Coolant on Time

Turbochargers generate an enormous amount of heat, which needs a healthy cooling system to keep under control. To this aim, your coolant must be checked once a month or more. You’ll need to flush it relatively frequently, and the entire cooling system should be pressure-tested by a Porsche-trained professional at least once a year.

Book Routine Turbocharger Service

Your turbochargers should be fully inspected every year or two. Again, follow the intervals outlined in your manual. During an inspection, our technicians can examine each turbocharger component for signs of wear and replace any worn-out parts.

Warm Your Turbochargers Up

Along with the aforementioned services, you’ll protect and preserve your Porsche’s turbochargers simply by letting them warm up for a couple of minutes before driving. This gives the oil enough time to fully circulate and grow warm throughout the engine and turbochargers.

Let Your Engine Cool Down

After a drive, turbocharger are extremely hot. If you immediately shut off the engine, the oil circulation also stops. The oil still trapped inside the glowing heat of the turbocharger can start to burn.

Instead, after stopping, let your engine run for a couple of minutes before switching it off. This lets the oil continue to circulate as the turbochargers cool down.
